Salinas pest control

We California's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Santa Cruz, Monterey, or Salinas rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Salinas pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
  • Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
  • Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
  • Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
  • When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires

Salinas Rodent Removal Tip:

What Sounds Do Rats Make?
Every homeowner and business owner has a list of issues related to their buildings that keep them up at night. There is always any number of maintenance issues from clogged gutters, to a leaky roof, to a patchy lawn demanding your attention. Out of all of them, perhaps there is one that is guaranteed to make you cringe. That is the question of whether or not you have a rat problem. Rats evoke a visceral reaction that few other animals evoke. A lot of that reaction is because of the fact that they are known to carry diseases. Their tails and teeth freak a lot of people out, as does the idea of a rat crawling on you when you are unaware. They also do a lot of damage to buildings with their constant gnawing. They seek out and spoil food. Their presence represents a serious health code violation, especially for businesses such as restaurants and hotels.

Given all the problems associated with the presence of rats in your home or business, the question becomes how to know if you have a rat problem. They are experts at hiding in small places and often only come out at night when nobody is around. That being the case, how do you know that they are around? In this article, we explore some of the signs that rats are infesting your home or business. It can start with sounds rats make.

Sounds rats make
To begin with, you will not be able to hear much of the vocalizations that rats make with your ears alone. They are capable of ultrasonic vocalizations, which they use to communicate with each other. There are whistling or chirping noises at high frequencies which usually evade human hearing. Adult rats use them to communicate and rat pups typically use them when they are distressed, such as when they are separated. If you are trying to locate rats based on their ultrasonic vocalizations, you will need special equipment. There are microphones that can pick-up and record these frequencies. Newer software makes it easier to detect and isolate this ultrasonic chatter and slow it down so that humans can hear it.

rodent trapping As for audible vocalizations, that is a little less common but it does happen. Rats will occasionally make chirping, squeaking, squealing, and chattering sounds that are within a frequency that humans can hear. It just isn't their default setting, so to speak. Hissing is another sound that rats make which human hearing is capable of picking up. They usually hiss when cornered or feeling threatened.

When it comes to noises that rats make, it is far more likely that you will first hear their movements. Night owls know that you hear a lot of noises in a building when it is late and things are quiet. This is particularly true of the noises that rats make because they are nocturnal. They are most active between dusk and dawn. You will hear scuffling and skittering noises as they move around. You will hear rustling noises as they rummage through trash or other obstacles. If you hear such movement overhead from your attic at night or in your walls, it might be rats. If you hear rustling in your kitchen or anyplace with food, it might be rats looking for a snack.

Other signs you have a rat problem
Of course, it isn't only sounds that might alert you to the presence of rats. You might see their droppings. You might find food containers have been chewed open. You might find evidence that they have gnawed through wiring or insulation. A strong unpleasant smell in the corners of an attic or basement might be due to rat urine. Using your eyes, nose, as well as your ears, will help you detect rats in your building.
